![]() Kindergarten teachers have a visible schedule to show students what they will do next.Īs much as people wish for the calendar to change to 2021, not much will be different January 1, or the months that follow. What props go on the wall behind you and on your bookshelf for web-camera meetings? Do you have enough bandwidth? Do you upgrade cameras, lighting or microphones? Do you paint the room a different color or get a more comfortable chair? How could you create a space to be productive? Until each family member “found their seat,” it was tough to focus on what came next. In the Covid world, it means finding your home workspace. In kindergarten, the teacher would say “ Find your seat.” This signaled: sit down and listen to what comes next. This reminded me how many kindergarten lessons are relevant for this time. In the Covid version of cooties, everyone is a potential infector, and we are reminded to wash our hands. If tagged, you then had cooties and could give it to others. His lessons included “Play fair, Put things back where you found them, Say you are sorry when you hurt someone, and Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.”Įarly in Covid social distancing I remember thinking “ Everyone has cooties.” In kindergarten, when we played “cooties,” someone was “infected” and tried to tag you. It was a collection of essays on ideas learned in kindergarten, still relevant as an adult. He published a lovely book “All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten” in 1986. Robert Fulghum had it right, everything I need to know I learned in kindergarten.

AWS pretty much always has extra machines in their data centers, so this excess is auctioned out at discounted prices as spot instances. When launching spot instances, you specify how much you're willing to pay for your EC2 instances (called the bid price). I like to think of this as like an auction, and is a very effective way to get EC2 instances on the cheap. Spot Instances?AWS lets you create spot instances on Amazon EC2 instead of the normal on-demand type. We'll also use Spot Instances to lower our costs a huge deal. It's also signficantly cheaper than the older generations, even though it looks to be much more powerful. This is the newest generation of the G-type of EC2 instances, and comes with 4 vcpus, 16 GB of RAM, 16 GB of VRAM, and a Nvidia T4 Tensor Core video card. Unlike what the Parsec documentation says, we'll use the new g4dn.xlarge instance type on Amazon EC2. You can also review the hardware requirements for the client machine here. While Parsec will need to be installed on both the host and client machines, the host will need to be a Windows machine to function correctly. Even at that level of lag, though, the game was pretty much playable, and the graphics, while not the best, was extremely better than I expected. Assuming we're hitting 60 FPS, that comes to around being 4-5 frames behind (probably double that, since our control input has to go back round to the host server too). This Parsec host was running from the AWS Hong Kong region, and was being streamed to a local laptop here in the Philippines, with a reported ping of around 60-80 ms. Of course, as is with any gaming rig, it has to run Crysis, right? No way was I not gonna try that out. So assuming I'm playing an hour every day for a month, with a 100 GB machine, my playtime is coming up to around USD 0.867 for every hour of play. There are also networking costs involved (since Parsec is streaming your game video out), but I haven't metered and done the math there yet. In the AWS HK region, I'm getting this at about USD 0.132 per GB per month. You will need enough storage to install the games you want to play, but you can always install / uninstall games over time to minimize this. This will cost you even when the server is turned off, so keep this in mind. Your Parsec server will also need storage - I opted to stick with the General Purpose SSDs. Since this is only turned on when I'm actually playing, that's not a bad deal at all. As a spot instance, it's currently costing me USD 0.427 per hour it's turned on, which is about a 55% discount on the on-demand price. I opted for a Windows-based g4dn.xlarge EC2 instance in the AWS Hong Kong region. Parsec uses networking magic to reduce the lag by a significant amount, while maintaining great graphics quality. ![]() Parsec handles the connection between the two so that you can run your games on the stronger machine, while you're controlling your game on the weaker one.You have another (less powerful) machine where you want to play your games (called the client),.You have a (beefy) machine where your games are installed (called the host),.Parsec is a bit of software that works very similarly to how Remote Desktop works for something like a Windows machine. If you wanna skip all the auxiliary details and go straight to the build, just click any of these links to jump straight to it. I thought I'd share how I did my setup on AWS, as well as throw in some recommendations on how to maximize your fun, while minimizing your costs as you do it. The whole setup of having a remote gaming server running Parsec while another (local) machine played the games on it works just as well as described. ![]() Being stuck as I was, I decided to give it a shot (also due to the coaxing of some friends), and, boy, was I surprised at the results. I've heard of Parsec some years back, but never really paid it a lot of attention. As much as I'd like to order new equipment, I can't do that with the restrictions on deliveries. Unfortunately, even with the increased time at home that I can use to game, I'm also stuck with a old-ish gaming rig that's wedged with a video card that is showing it's age. As is with many people, I'm stuck at home because of the COVID-19 lockdowns most everywhere. ![]() It’s Not You - It’s Your Goals: Knowing When to Quit May 30, 2023.Meet the Authors: Wharton’s Katy Milkman on How to Change May 14, 2021.Meet the Authors: Mauro Guillén on How Businesses Succeed in a Global Marketplace June 21, 2021.Meet the Authors: Wharton’s Peter Cappelli on The Future of the Office November 4, 2021.Meet the Authors: Erika James and Lynn Perry Wooten on The Prepared Leader October 3, 2022.Navigating Microaggressions at Work November 1, 2022.How National Politics Are Impacting DEI in the Workplace February 7, 2023.Diversity at Work: Why Inclusive Storytelling Matters April 4, 2023.Improving Accessibility in the Workplace - and in Space May 16, 2023.Great Question: Kevin Werbach on Cryptocurrency and Fintech July 21, 2021.Great Question: Dean Erika James on Crisis Management August 16, 2021.Great Question: Wendy De La Rosa on Personal Finance October 15, 2021.Great Question: Witold Henisz on ESG Initiatives November 17, 2021. ![]() Making the Business Case for ESG May 3, 2022.How Companies and Capital Can Be Forces for Good June 21, 2022.Investing in Refugee Entrepreneurs in East Africa August 8, 2022.Why Employee-owned Companies Are Better at Building Worker Wealth November 11, 2022.Beyond Business: Humanizing ESG December 13, 2021.How Analytics Is Changing Finance November 29, 2022.How Data Analytics Can Help Deliver Social Good December 20, 2022.How Analytics Can Boost Competitiveness in Sports January 31, 2023. 8/13/2023 0 Comments Quake 4 mods![]() One of the Cyberdemon encounters - there will be much much moreĪ small set of a few (but one huge!) maps using mostly the Arcane Dimensions and original Quake assets but offering some different weapons and monsters, and with a simple but superenjoyable story. You might disagree with me that Doom Eternal, despite being a great game, didn't really choose the best path for the series to evolve, but if you don't - believe me, Slayer's Testaments actually seems the right and the best evolution for the series! There are original Doom-styled maps, there are Quake maps with modern Doom enemies, and there are creatively rethought Doom 2016 / Eternal levels. This mod is actually in Early Access, using the assets of both Quake and Doom. There is a boss fight with you wielding a crucible VS FOUR CYBERDEMONS.The start hub for the episodes is the Fortress of Doom - how cool is that?.You can actually rocketjump as you would normally do in Quake - and probably unite that move with a Gauss rifle jump, I'm still getting used to the joint technique.Sometimes I can't believe that it was possible to take the best all those games have to offer and execute those ideas on a Quake engine - but yes the modders acheived it! Just realize how epic the mod is: Okay, you enjoyed Quake in 1996? You played Doom back in 1993 to 1995? You didn't expect much of Doom 2016 yet were completely astonished by the reboot? Or maybe you've even seen the popular video " What if Doom (2016) had been released in 1996?". Tears of the False God, one of the largest and most recent maps for Arcane Dimensions So, if you've seen Quake in 1996 and spent great time in this game or just want to check out what Quake actually is - never ask a question "should I try Arcane Dimensions?", just go for it, download the mod and launch it. It's expected to be there, but its not that important" - don't expect the Arcane Dimensions to have a single plot or story unifying all the dozens maps, but the stories that certain AD maps are telling on their own make the mod even greater - I'm talking about the maps like Leptis Magna or Firetop Mountain. One thing I especially have to note about Arcane Dimensions is that it is completely in line with John Carmack's famous quote: "Story in a game is like story in a porn movie. The whole mod looks and feels as if Quake has grown up together with us in those 25 years, has become stronger, cleverer, and evolved in its own style, and I just can't stop saying "thank yous" to Simon O'Callaghan (by the way - what's happened to his website simonoccom?) and the other members of this great modding team. ![]() A true and canonical Quake experience brought into the 2020s with great and modern level art / level design, new yet canonic monsters, new weapons - which are also mind-blowing yet so true. This one's simply the best: the largest one, the prettiest one, the most user-friendly one, I can keep going forever. Of what I've been able to download and test in the recent year, my top chart of singleplayer Quake mods would look like this: To start with, there is a very good review of the mods keeping Quake alive in 2017 by Dominic Tarason at Kotaku, the only minor flaw I see about it is that he sometimes mixes the concepts of true modifications and map packs created for those mods - which are also great by the way but the user will kind of get to them occasionally if he or she starts playing the actual mod.Īt the moment, the place I normally look for Quake mods is the Mod DB, but there are a lot of modifications there which are just lacking new information, so that's why I would probably ask the more experienced members of this subreddit to contribute to the discussion. ![]() I think what the community lacks is a sort of a hub to discuss the new promising mods - as well as to keep track of the newest developments to the existing mods, so let's try it right here. I haven't really seen a review of them to help the oldschool Quakers who haven't heard much about the recent developments rediscover their favourite game. I'm obsessed with Quake in the recent couple of years - just as I was 25 years ago, but now it's mostly thanks to several Quake mods, which I assume many of you know and play. Hi everyone, I searched this subreddit for such a topic and sadly didn't find much. However, the mod was continuously updated, including husbandry, more machinery, and fewer bugs, allowing the mod to get better reviews once it was released and updated for Farming Simulator 19. There were a lot of issues on both console and PC as there weren’t any animals, workers couldn’t be hired, the texture and lighting seemed off, and more. When the mod was released, the reviews were mixed. The mod is relatively small in size, even after the updates that were made to it.
